My Simple 5-Minute Nightly Money Routine That Stopped My Overspending
I used to check my money only once a month.
And every time, I felt the same shock. Where did it all go? $80 on delivery, $45 on coffee, $30 on things I don't even remember. I told myself I would be better next month. I never was.
I tried budgeting apps, spreadsheets, everything. I would use them for 5 days and then stop. The problem wasn't the tool. The problem was I was checking too late.
Why Monthly Budgeting Failed For Me
When you check your spending after 30 days, it's already done. You can't fix it. It's like looking at the score after the game is over.
What I needed was a way to see it daily, but in a way that was too small to fail. That's how this 5-minute nightly routine started.
Step 1: The 2-Minute Quick Scan (Minute 1-2)
Every night around 9:45 PM, after brushing my teeth, I open my banking app. I don't do any math. I just look at today's 3 or 4 transactions.
For example, yesterday was: $4.5 coffee, $12 lunch, $7 Grab ride. Total $23.5. I write that total in a small notebook on my bedside table. That's it. No judgment.

From The Rich Daily Team: We used to do monthly budgeting too and it never worked. When we switched to a daily 2-minute scan, we noticed our small leaks faster. In our experience, just writing the daily total by hand makes you 2x more aware than an automatic app. This is personal experience, results vary.
Step 2: The One-Line Journal (Minute 3-4)
After writing the total, I write one sentence: "Today I spent because..."
Yesterday I wrote: "Today I spent because I was too lazy to bring lunch." The day before: "Because I was stressed from work."
After one week, I saw my pattern. 80% of my overspending was not about food. It was about being tired. That one line was more valuable than any chart.
Step 3: The Tomorrow Plan (Minute 5)
In the last minute, I write one tiny plan for tomorrow. Not a budget. Just one thing.
Examples from my notebook: "Tomorrow I will bring water bottle so I don't buy $2 water." or "Tomorrow I will wait 24 hours before buying that shirt."
It's so small that I actually do it. And because it's small, it works.
The 30-Day Result For Me
✅ Minute 1-2: Scan today's transactions, write total
✅ Minute 3-4: One sentence why I spent
✅ Minute 5: One tiny plan for tomorrow
✅ Result for me: Daily average from ~$28 to ~$19 after 30 days - illustrative, not guaranteed
Final Thought
This routine is boring. And that's why it worked for me when fancy apps didn't. I don't need motivation. I just need 5 minutes before bed.
If monthly budgeting makes you anxious, try shrinking it to 5 minutes nightly. It stopped my overspending.
